  • Location: Johannesburg

Dental Protection is pleased to be supporting the SADA Congress and Exhibition from Friday 14 to Sunday 16 March in Johannesburg.

Members of the Dental Protection team will be at stand 10 in the foyer, so please do not hesitate to come and talk to us. We hope to see you there!

Both Dr Alasdair McKelvie and Dr Sue Boynton from Dental Protection in the UK will be speaking at the Congress on Saturday 15 March.

Sue Boynton, Senior Dento-Legal Adviser addresses the subject of Social media and ethics: the benefits and risks for the Young Dentists Council at 9.00 am.

Most people are aware that this is the age of social media, but did you know what potential this brings to you? Facebook alone is estimated to have more than 50 million users across Africa! This presentation will look at both the positive benefits of embracing social media and the risks which can arise.

Learning objectives

At the conclusion of the presentation delegates should:

  • Be able to identify practical tips for effective social media use.
  • Be able to select appropriate risk management tools and implement them in relation to their personal and professional social media profiles.
  • Have an understanding of the importance of professionalism in social media use.
  • Have an understanding of how to deal with negative feedback on a social media platform.

Alasdair McKelvie, DPL's Lead for South Africa, will be delivering a plenary session at 4.30 pm onEthics; differing dimensions and common solutions.

If given the choice, most dentists would probably prefer to do the beauty treatment rather than the beastly stuff. Dr McKelvie will highlight ethical problems when treating both groups.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the presentation delegates should:

  • Understand why they can occasionally make poor ethical decisions.
  • Have a strategy to avoid ethical fading.
  • To identify when a patient may lack capacity to consent.
  • To know when confidential information about a patient can be shared with other healthcare colleagues.
