  • Janet Barnes
    Dentolegal Adviser
    BDS MDSc

    Jan qualified from Bristol in 1974 and then worked in general dental practice in County Durham, the West Midlands and Leeds. She gained a Master’s Degree in Restorative Dentistry in 1992 and following a 12-month research project, joined the Dental Reference Service where she worked for 18 years.

    Jan joined Dental Protection in 2011 working as a Dentolegal Adviser.

  • Martin Beaumont
    Claims Manager
    FCILEx

    Martin worked in the legal profession in private practice for some 25 years, including secondment ‘in- house’ to a large insurance company, prior to joining Dental Protection in 2005. Martin is part of the claims team.

  • Nancy Boodhoo
    International Dentolegal Adviser
    BDS FDSRCS

    Nancy qualified at the Royal Dental Hospital in London and obtained her Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh. She pursued a career in oral surgery and restorative dentistry at the Royal Dental, St George’s and the Eastman Dental Hospital, before spending time with British Airways as part of its dental team.

    Nancy now practises part-time in Guildford, Surrey, and lectures extensively in the Caribbean on both medicolegal and dentolegal subjects. She also works closely with the medical and dental schools at the University of the West Indies.

    Nancy originally joined as a Dentolegal Adviser and is now Head of Operations for Bermuda and the Caribbean for both medical and dental matters.

  • Michael Butterworth
    Senior Dentolegal and Cases Consultant
    BDS DGDP(UK) MFDS(RCS) LLM FICD  MCIArb

    Michael joined the Medical Protection Society in 1987 after 17 years in general practice, as a member of the Dental Secretariat. He became a Dentolegal Adviser on the formation of Dental Protection in 1999 and subsequently held positions as Assistant Dental Director, Deputy Director and Company Secretary.

    Michael is now Senior Cases Consultant and is involved in managing Dental Protection’s complex cases, coaching new DLAs in claims advice and management and resolving intra-professional disputes (Michael is an accredited mediator with the Institute of Chartered Arbitrators).

  • Caroline Chapman
    Senior Dental Claims Advisor

    Caroline qualified from Birmingham Dental School in 1999 and, following vocational training, has continued to work as a dental practitioner in the West Midlands where she also a member of Dudley LDC. She presently divides her time between general practice and works as a PCT Dental Practice Adviser.

    After working as a Local Dental Adviser and as an Associate Dentolegal Adviser, Caroline was appointed as a Dentolegal Adviser for Dental Protection in 2010.

  • Alan Cohen
    Senior Dentolegal Consultant
    BDS LDSRCS ACIArb

    Alan qualified as a dentist at University College Dental School, London, in 1969, and has worked in general practice for over 30 years, as well as in the hospital service and as a university clinical lecturer. He was a long-serving member of the Barnet Local Dental Committee and was its treasurer for over 20 years.

    Alan joined Dental Protection as a full-time Dentolegal Adviser in 1997 and then became Head of Dental Services (London) before being appointed as a part-time Senior Dentolegal Consultant in October 2011. He also manages Dental Protection’s UK corporate membership.

    He has lectured in the UK and internationally on many aspects of dentolegal risk management.

  • Paula Conwell
    Claims Manager
    LPC

    Paula is a Solicitor, she joined the Claims Team as a Claims Manager in 2009 having gained 11 years personal injury claims experience in private practice.

  • Elaine Cook
    Dentolegal Adviser
    BChD

    Elaine qualified from Leeds University in December 1986, and was commissioned into the Royal Army Dental Corps in 1987 on a Short Service Commission before taking a Medium Commission in the Royal Air Force in 1992. She has extensive experience of primary dental care within the military, both in peacetime and on operations, and served in the first Gulf war conflict. Elaine now works as a civilian salaried practitioner within the Armed Forces, and maintain my military roots as a Royal Auxiliary Air Force Dental Officer with 4626 Squadron. She have also gained experience within the NHS, Private and Community Dental Services as a locum dental surgeon whilst studying for my legal qualifications, so have a broad knowledge of many areas of dentistry.

    Elaine holds a Graduate Diploma in Law and a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Studies, she is currently studying for the Postgraduate Certificate in Dental Law and Ethics. She joined Dental Protection in September 2014 as a Part-Time Associate Dentolegal Adviser working two days a week in the Leeds office.

  • Sarah Cree
    Dental Complaints Manager

    Sarah Cree is a Dental Complaints Adviser at Dental Protection. She has worked in primary care dentistry for 23 years. Sarah worked as a qualified dental nurse initially and then as a practice manager in a six surgery practice which provided both NHS and private dental care. Sarah then went on to work with a Primary Care Trust for over five years as an NHS Dental Contract Manager. Sarah’s past experience has given her a wealth of experience in relation to managing and advising on dental complaints.

  • Caroline Dodd
    Dentolegal Adviser
    BDS LDSRCS MSc

    Caroline graduated from the Royal Dental Hospital in 1984 and then spent two years in hospital dentistry specifically paediatric dentistry and oral surgery. Following this, she spent six years at the University of California in San Francisco as a Resident in General Dentistry and then Associate Clinical Professor in Oral Medicine. She returned to the UK to complete her master's degree in Dental Public Health at the University of Edinburgh in 1994. She worked for five years in industry as a research Dentist for Proctor and Gamble before moving into general practice in 2000.


    She continues to work as a GDP and has worked for Dental Protection since 2014 as a Dentolegal Adviser.

  • Brian Edlin
    Senior Dentolegal and Cases Consultant
    BDS

    Brian qualified in Glasgow in 1971 and after a house job in Oral Surgery at the Royal London he entered general practice in Manchester where for 27 years he ran two practices carrying out both NHS and private dentistry. Brian was an elected member of the Manchester LDC and reached the position of Vice Chairman until his retirement from NHS practice in 1999.

    Brian joined Dental Protection in 1995 and was formerly Head of Dental Services in Leeds, before becoming a senior consultant in 2014. He deals with both UK and international cases.

  • Louise Eggleton
    Associate Dentolegal Adviser
    BChD

    Louise graduated from the University of Leeds in 2005.  After completing vocational training she has worked in NHS and private practices as an associate and a locum.  She currently is a Clinical Outreach tutor with Sheffield University and works as a Senior Dental Officer for the Rotherham Foundation Trust.  Louise joined Dental protection in 2016.

  • James Foster
    Senior Dentolegal Adviser
    BDS MFGDP(UK)LLM

    James qualified from Newcastle Dental School in 1990, and ran practices in the Northumberland market towns of Hexham and Prudhoe.

    James had various roles with the Northern Deanery which included being a VT and GPT Adviser, Dental Tutor and Workforce Adviser. He also taught at Newcastle Dental Hospital for four years. James obtained a Masters degree in Medical Law in 2005, and has further obtained the MFGDP(UK) and a Certificate in Clinical Education. James is also a trained mentor.

    James is the Head of Dental Services for Australia and New Zealand.

  • Martin Foster
    Dentolegal Adviser
    BDS MPH DipHSM LLM MA

    Martin qualified in 1986 from Edinburgh Dental School and worked in general practice before moving into a career in the Community Dental Service which involved experience of a wide range of primary care and hospital settings, including care for maximum security psychiatric patients, sedation and anaesthetic referral services, teaching law and ethics and clinical tutoring in paediatric dentistry.

    A combination of further studies and experience resulted in completion of a Master’s degree in Public Health, the Diploma in Health Service Management and registration as a Specialist in Paediatric Dentistry. In addition to his clinical role, an ongoing interest in legal issues led to the completion of legal examinations as an Intrant in the Faculty of Advocates.

    Martin was appointed Assistant Clinical Director with responsibility for NHS Lothian Children’s Dental Service in 2007. He is a regular presenter on a range of legal and ethical issues and has a particular interest in communication and risk management. Martin maintains a weekly clinical commitment as a Specialist in Paediatric Dentistry.

    Martin began his career at Dental Protection as a part-time Associate Dento-Legal Adviser before taking up his current position as a Dentolegal Adviser in 2011.

  • Jane Griffiths
    Associate Dentolegal Adviser
    BDS LDSRCS PGCDLE

    A University of London graduate, Jane spent six months as a house officer at University College Hospital and 12 years in a general dental practice in Hertfordshire when she was a member of the Local Dental Committee. This was followed by 14 years as a Dental Reference Officer with the Dental Reference Service where she gained extensive experience of clinical audit, knowledge of NHS regulations and risk management. She holds the FGDP Certificate in Appraisal of Dental Practices and has obtained the Postgraduate Certificate in Dental Law and Ethics.

    Jane joined Dental Protection in 2011 as a Local Dental Adviser and was appointed as an Associate Dentolegal Adviser in 2012.
