Antibiotic allergy is reported in up to 10% of patients yet numerous recent studies have shown that, when tested, ~90% are not allergic at all! Allergies claimed to analgesics, sulfites and local anaesthetics are also common. Given the limited range of drugs used in dentistry heeding allergy poses challenges to appropriate drug selection, especially given emerging data that most allergic reactions do not last forever. How can you confidently tell the difference between patients who once were allergic, who were never allergic and those who truly are?
Join Dr Geraldine Moses AM, Consultant Pharmacist to the Australian Dental Association, for a one-hour recorded webinar discussion about the four types of drug allergies, how to differentiate between them, how to prescribe appropriately to each and how to take an allergy history. This webinar may show that much of what you learnt at university about drug allergies may no longer be true.
Dr Moses will be joined by Dental Protection Dentolegal Consultant, Dr Annalene Weston for a real time question and answer discussion.
By attending this webinar you will:
- Know the four types of allergic reactions and their key manifestations
- Identify allergic patients who must avoid all penicillins and those who do not
- Differentiate between sulfite and ‘sulfa’ allergy
- Explain how to manage proven local anaesthetic allergy
