Our experienced team of over 60 dentolegal consultants is here to help you. Our consultants are all dental professionals from a wide range of backgrounds, including experienced and practising dentists.

  • Lesley Harrison
    Dentolegal Adviser
    BDS MFGDP(UK)

    Lesley qualified from Newcastle University in 1991. After completing vocational training, she has worked in both NHS and private practices, as an associate and principal.

    Lesley worked at the Leeds Dental Institute as a Clinical Demonstrator in the Restorative department for five years, and is currently a Clinical Outreach Tutor with Sheffield University. She also works part-time in private general practice and has been a Clinical Outreach Tutor with Sheffield University since 2010.

    Lesley joined Dental Protection as an Associate Dentolegal Adviser in 2014, becoming a Dentolegal adviser in 2016.

  • Richard Hartley
    Dentolegal Adviser
    BDS MFGDP(UK) MEd LLM

    Richard graduated from Newcastle and worked in West Yorkshire before buying a practice in Huddersfield. He subsequently worked as a Clinical Tutor at the Leeds Dental Institute, overseeing the Outreach Clinic from 2008 - 2014.

    Before being appointed a Dento-Legal Adviser in 2012, Richard had worked as both a Local Dental Adviser and an Associate Dentolegal Adviser.

  • David Hartoch
    Dentolegal Adviser
    BDS MFGDP(UK)

    David graduated from the University of Dundee in 1984. After a short associateship in Lincolnshire, he became a practice owner and later developed the practice to be VT-approved.

    David gained the MFGDP in 2000 and has completed the DPDS and BUOLD courses. He became VT Adviser for the East Yorkshire scheme based in Hull in 2002 a position held until 2015. Working for Yorkshire Deanery included inspecting practices and interviewing the potential trainers as well as giving the occasional presentation.

    After a period acting as a Local Dental Adviser, David was appointed as a Dentolegal Adviser in 2010 and became a full time staff member in 2015.

  • Hugh Harvie
    Senior Dentolegal and Cases Consultant
    BDS FDSRCS(Edin) FDSRCPS(Glasg) FFGDP(UK)

    Hugh qualified in Edinburgh before going into general dental practice; initially as an associate and then subsequently as a single-handed principal. He returned to Edinburgh as a lecturer in Children’s and Preventive Dentistry and was then appointed to the Borders Health Board as Chief Administrative Dental Officer. In 1990 Hugh took up the post of the first full-time Dental Adviser with the MDDUS and became Head of Dental Services in 1996, a position he held until 2008 before leaving to work for Dental Protection. In addition to his responsibility for Dental Protection members in Scotland, he is responsible for members employed in the salaried services in the UK which includes dentists working in the community, hospital and armed forces.

    Hugh has long had an interest in undergraduate and postgraduate education and is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Dental Law and Ethics at Glasgow University. He has also been an examiner at undergraduate and postgraduate level including the International Qualifying Examination.

  • Russell Heathcote-Curtis
    Associate Dentolegal Adviser
    LDSRCS

    Russell qualified from UCH Dental School London in 1980 and was in general practice until 2014, as well as working part-time as a hospital dental practitioner. He has been an Independent Clinical Adviser for his Local Health Authority for over 15 years and former member of the BDA Representative Body.

    He has been involved with Hertfordshire LDC for over 20 years, including being Vice-Chair, and was a member of Hertfordshire PCT Performance Decision Making Committee and the developing Local Professional Network group.

    Russell had been Local Dental Adviser for Dental Protection before being appointed as an Associate Dentolegal Adviser in 2012.

  • Joseph Ingham
    Dentolegal Adviser
    BDS LLM

    Joe Ingham qualified in 1983 from The London.  He works as a tutor at the School of Hygiene and Therapy at The Eastman.

    Originally appointed as an Associate Dentolegal Adviser for Dental Protection, Joe was appointed as a Dentolegal Adviser in 2009.

  • Philip Johnstone
    Dentolegal Adviser
    BChD MFGDP(UK) DipResDent FFGDP(UK)

    Philip works as a Dentolegal Adviser in the London office. He practised in a mixed general dental practice in Sunderland where he  was a member of the LDC. Philip was a chair of the GDC’s Fitness to Practise Panel.  He holds the Faculty’s Diplomas in Restorative Dentistry and Dental Health Services Leadership and Management. Philip obtained his Fellowship in General Dental Practice in 2010 and is currently a Fellowship Assessor. He also holds the Certificate in Mentoring in Dentistry.

  • Helen Kaney
    Senior Dentolegal Adviser
    BDS LLB Dip LP MBA FFGDP(UK)

    Helen is dually qualified as both a dentist and a solicitor and completed an MBA in 2013.

    She qualified in dentistry from Glasgow University and worked for several years in general dental practice. She studied law at Strathclyde University and initially worked as a dentolegal adviser in England before returning to Scotland and training as a solicitor. She then spent several years in legal practice, where she specialised in defending clinical negligence claims against doctors and dentists, appearing at Fatal Accident Inquiries and advising and acting for dentists in relation to NHS Tribunals and the General Dental Council, acting for medical and dental defence organisations (including Dental Protection) on behalf of their members.

    Helen works for Dental Protection as a full-time Senior Dentolegal Adviser based in the Edinburgh office where she is the lead for Scottish Dental Services.

  • Jim Lafferty
    Associate Dentolegal Adviser
    BDS MJDF (RCS Eng)

    Jim graduated in 1993 from the University of Birmingham, before doing voluntary VT on the Sheffield Scheme. He has worked in general dental practice since 1994, becoming a practice owner in 2001, in partnership with his now long-suffering wife. He passed the MJDF(RCS Eng) in 2012.

    Jim has had a strong interest in dental politics since 1996, joining Sheffield LDC, where he has been secretary, and chairman for 11 years. He was twice elected to the General Dental Council.

    He is currently Chairman of the BDA’s English Council and South Yorkshire Branch, having been Chairman of the Young Dentist Committee for 6 years, and Chair of the BDA UK Council for 1 year.

    Jim is on the Dental Advisory Board of DPL, has been a Local Dental Advisor, and was appointed an Associate Dentolegal Adviser in 2016.

  • Clare Lawrence
    Dentolegal Adviser 
    BDS MFDS RCS(Eng), Dip D Sed.

    Clare works as a Dentolegal Adviser in the London Office. She qualified from Manchester Dental Hospital and continued within the secondary care setting, while completing her post graduate training.

    After working in Lister, and Luton and Dunstable maxillofacial departments she continued as a Staff Surgeon at Kings Dental Hospital. Clare completed her Diploma in Conscious Sedation at Guys Hospital in 2006 and gained entry on to the Oral Surgery Specialist list in 2008.She continues to carry out general dentistry and Oral surgery in the primary care setting.

  • Neena Manek
    Dentolegal Adviser
    BChD MFGDP LLM

    Neena Manek qualified from the University of Leeds in 2001 and has been working mainly in mixed general practice since then.  Her particular interests in general practice are the treatment of anxious patients and children. Neena gained her MFGDP in 2006. She has also worked in domiciliary dental practice, gaining insight into the challenges of providing treatment to vulnerable adults.

    Neena is also a member of the Sutton and Merton LDC. Neena has a long standing interest in the legal aspects of dentistry, commencing at undergraduate level. 

  • Thomas McCaffrey
    Associate Dentolegal Adviser
    BDS

    Thomas graduated from the University of Liverpool in 1999. After completion of vocational training he worked as an associate in both Southport and Liverpool. He returned to Northern Ireland to set up his own practice in 2007 and was a vocational trainer in the Northern Ireland scheme. He has a keen interest in Forensic Dentistry and has a Diploma in Forensic Human Identification and is currently studying for his Diploma in Legal Medicine with the Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine.

  • Alasdair McKelvie
    Senior Dentolegal Adviser
    BDS LLM 

    Alasdair graduated from Dundee Dental School in 1984 and worked as a house officer for twelve months, gaining experience in restorative dentistry. He then worked in general practice in East Yorkshire until 1990 when he started a practice in Cottingham. He completed the Certificate Course in Restorative Dentistry at the Eastman Dental Institute in 1995.

    Alasdair began working as a Local Dental Adviser in 2000 before joining the team at Dental Protection as an Associate Dentolegal Adviser three years later. He graduated from the University of Wales with his LLM in Healthcare Law in 2007 and was appointed as a full-time Dentolegal Adviser at Dental Protection in 2008.

    Alasdair has been active member of the local BDA section for a number of years, including being Chairman. He is dental lead for South Africa,and the South Africa Hub.

  • Bernice McLaughlin
    Dentolegal Adviser
    BDS LLM

    Bernice qualified from the University of Dundee in 1993 and spent three years as a SHO in oral and maxillofacial surgery and orthodontics. She has worked as a general dental practitioner in Scotland and Ireland for many years.

    Since 2008 Bernice has been a dental outreach tutor for final year dental students from the University of Dundee. She was the curricular lead for the Accident & Emergency / Oral Surgery Department of Aberdeen Dental School where she also taught.

    Bernice obtained her LLM in Healthcare Law and Ethics from the University of Dundee in 2014 and became an associate dentolegal adviser for Dental Protection early in 2015.She was appointed as a dentolegal adviser in 2016.

    Bernice maintains her clinical commitment by providing NHS Surgical Dentistry Services on referral and remains actively involved in teaching final year dental students.

  • Jessica McMahon
    Associate Dentolegal Adviser
    BDS

    Jessica graduated from Birmingham University in 1985. After a few years as an associate she became a practice owner in partnership with her husband.

    Jessica completed clinical attachments in oral surgery and orthodontics and continued managing and working in her practices for 25 years, initially in the NHS and latterly in the private sector.

    Jessica was appointed as an Associate Dentolegal Adviser in the Leeds office. She  is currently studying for a Masters in Medical Law at Northumbria University.
